Pumpkin Bread in a Canning Jar

This thanksgiving I tried to bring a bit of apocalyptic flair to the baking and traveling extravaganza.

As baking in jars was something I’d never done before, I used a box of pumpkin quick bread rather than try a new recipe and a new method. I did add candied ginger to the mix just because.Pumpkin Bread in Canning Jars

I used half-pint Ball jars with a quilted pattern on the outside. They have straight sides rather than tapering at the top like most jars do. This is important so that the baked good can slide right out.

I Met Family Radio Fanatics and All I Got Was This Pamphlet

So, I went to lunch today and who do I see walking in front of me on Boylston Street?! YES. A Family Radio Fanatic. He was a sweet old man who explained I still had time to “cry out for mercy,” and said, “God bless” to me. And of course I said it back. I’m damned, not rude.

Crying out seems so shameless and flashy, though. Is it too late for simple repenting?

Post-Apocalyptic Eating

So, today I’ve been eating only non-perishables and drinking water. I’m planing to grab a Powerade, depending on the expiration date. If the date is March 9th 2012 or later it’s mine.

I’m trying to see what it’d be like to only eat food that would still be good a year into the post-apocalyptic world.

I can’t churn butter and I don’t have a chicken or a cow, so dairy is out. I don’t even understand how to make bread with modern electronic tools so that’s not happening.

There were free baked goods everywhere in the office today but I didn’t have any. Bagels would have been a wrap in the first 2 weeks, much less a year later.

I like to think of this as a reverse Old Sturbridge Village experience. Instead of thinking of how our ancestors lived, I’m trying to think of what like might be like in the future.
