Post-Apocalyptic Graphic Novel (Comic): The Scourge

UPDATE: Got an email from a nice man at Aspen Comics who says, “Scourge is currently scheduled to go Digital in late January or early February. Keep checking our fb page and follow us on twitter for the latest updates.” Yay!

Sometimes a Zombie isn’t the worst thing you could become or watch others become. The sick and the shambling, we know how to fight them—with sticks and stones. But what about full-on demonic-style transformations from man to beast?

In apocalyptic scenarios, there’s always the fear that the mutations on center-stage might not be the only mutations that have occurred. We worry if animals might turn as well as people. We worry that after the walking dead come the running dead. And in Aspen Comics’ The Scourge, we worry if after the gargoyles, comes The Devil.

Yes, gargoyles.

Bullying Prevention Can Increase Our Chances of Survival

Although it’s almost over, let’s not forget that October is National Bullying Prevention Month. With our eyes on the youth of first-world societies and their inability to act like civilized human beings, too often tormenting one another to death, we forget where they learn it from.

Civility is a taught behavior. Unfortunately, many adults seem to think being grown is the same thing as acting right. They forget that hate crimes are not youthful indiscretions but evidence of an ailing society where some give themselves permission to prey on others based on minutia. Rarely is prey selected based on anything actually dangerous (Zombies, Vampires, Brain Slugs) or chosen by the individual (Mad scientists, Militias). Rather the prey are selected based on the basic Us mentality.

NYCC: MTV's DEATH VALLEY – Q&A with some cast and crew

MTV is going back to their 90’s roots with a show that might actually be geared at people, plain ole regular people with a sense of humor and no interest in the lives of specific youths either real or fictional (or some disturbing hybrid of the two).

I’ve accepted that if I want music I’ll have to turn on the radio, navigate to a website, or tune into those weird channels that play music and rotate still frames of trivia about the current artist. If I want music videos, I have to go to YouTube or specific artist websites. Moreover, if I want quality television, I’ll have to look around, but never directly at, MTV.

Wait–What’s that? MTV has a new mockumentary style series about dopey local cops… RENO 911? Nope, this show is about the fictional Undead Task Force (UTF) of the LAPD. The Undead task force is the unit that now exists to respond to the new threat of supernatural activity.

Huwat? Now, I’m interested. Continue reading “NYCC: MTV's DEATH VALLEY – Q&A with some cast and crew”

Survival Sex Kit (not safe for some works)

So, when the power goes out and the liquor has run down, someone might get horny.

This brings me back to that episode of Seinfeld when Elaine’s favorite contraceptive is discontinued and she goes out and buys as much of it as she can. But then she rations it. She judges men more carefully and while she might like a guy, she also has to determine if they’re truly “sponge worthy.”

We must remember to invest in some of our baser needs to stave off maddness. But we can’t just start doing every Tom, Dick, and Harry who offers a leer because it’s good for our state of minds. That’s how you create Super Aids, Syphilmidia, and Babies. We need to be able to indulge and ration.

Solution: Invest in an Emergency Sex Kit. Continue reading “Survival Sex Kit (not safe for some works)”

Post-Apocalyptic Comic: ORCHID #1

This week I was able to preview the full first issue of the new comic from Dark Horse Orchid.

I can safely use my new favorite phrase to describe this comic because it’s recommended for 18+ audiences– Orchid is an Amazeballs Apocalyizgasm.

The preview on the Dark Horse site is mildly misleading. It starts of very slowly with a lot of backstory and foreshadowing. No characters for the first four pages even. We learn that this world is set far in the future of our world, which has been ravaged by flooding, wide-spread animal mutations, and the general demise of human society.

At first I was a bit skeptical, thinking I’d be reading a storybook with a James Earl Jones-esque narrator telling me about how things were once and how sad they’ve become and that, maybe one day, there’ll be a hero fight against the corrupt power and rage against the machine[1. Pun totally intended. ORCHID is the creation of Rage Against The Machine’s former guitarist, Tom Morello].

Then exciting things started happening. There was suddenly a band of rebels I found myself cheering for and a cause I vaguely understood and wholly supported. Continue reading “Post-Apocalyptic Comic: ORCHID #1”

Robot Uprising Apocalypse: "Killing" Robots

Everyone has their eyes on zombies. Even while IBM’s Watson is creeping on the game-show circut lulling us all into a false sense of security at his humorous inability to listen AND compute.

[1. For more Watson videos, check out the IBM YouTube page.]

Cute, huh? No, not cute. Subversive!

While zombies merely wish to feast on your flesh and convert you to one of the horde, robots are more analytical and thoughtful in their interactions. They might enslave us, turn us into fuel for their super machines, experiment on us, Or just slaughter us wholesale because we take up too much space and serve no useful purpose.

I recently had a conversation with a computer with some very disturbing results. It went like so:
