Likely Apocalypses: World Wide Nuclear War

Let’s expand on some of the likely apocalypses we touched on back in our list of likely apocalypses.

First up in the list of likely apocalypses: World Wide Nuclear War

Nuclear war may be inevitable, but we have been lucky so far. However, we shouldn’t kid ourselves that the end of the cold war has made the threat of the nuclear war an irrelevance. In a lot of ways, things are more dangerous than ever. There are two nuclear powers who refuse to play nicely with each other in Pakistan and India, then there is the newly armed and unpredictable North Korean regime, and a belligerent Russia keen to reassert its power to the world. According to analysts, there is a 5% chance that a nuclear war could happen every decade.

All it takes is for someone to press the detonation button. A single US stealth bomber can carry 16 B83 nuclear bombs. Each of those bombs can produce 75 times the yield of the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima, and a single Trident submarine can destroy over 40 million people.

The detonation of a nuclear bomb would cause a blanket of particles in the atmosphere that would blot out the sun’s rays and result in the death of the vegetation on which life depends. This would be in addition to the death of people, plant, and animals caused by the explosive power, shockwaves and radiation. Exposure to nuclear radiation would cause severe burns and effects to human even days after the nuclear explosion.

This nuclear bombs can be delivered by aircraft and warheads that are deployed on air-launched cruise missiles and land-based or by a submarine-based long-range missiles. The smoke that would be created from a nuclear war explosion would create a 150 million tons of smoke that would create a massive cloud in the atmosphere blocking the sunlight. This thick and massive cloud will prevent the ray of sunlight from reaching the face of the earth, and will take days or months for it to clear out. This would prevent any plants from being able to grow in that particular environment.

A regular sized nuclear weapon that is detonated over a city would burn away around 40 to 65 square miles in the blink of an eye.

With the fear of a nuclear war happening in the future, countries and individuals have built underground bunkers for protection from a nuclear war. In October 4 to 7, 2016, Russian government conducted a drill, evacuating 40 million people in 5,000 bunkers.

This drill was the largest show of a Civil Defense exercise that was ever carried out.

Evacuating people to a remote place far away from the affected area would technically not be a feasible preposition because of the severe radiation effects in the regions after the nuclear blast. The only safe way will be for people to move to nearby bunkers as quickly as possible without wasting time as exposure to radiation for a longer time would either reduce the survival rates or create health issues in due course time. The only way to survive a nuclear war is self-evacuation into a nearby nuclear bunker that was built to withstand radiation effects as quickly as possible.

Nuclear radiation will last for a long time that people would have to remain in bunkers for a year or more. To remain in bunkers for such a long time is not feasible, and therefore, there is no sense in building bunkers.
