This policy explains what information incaseofsurvival.com (“In Case of Survival,” “we,” “us”) collects when you visit, why, who else handles it, and what you can do about it. The short version: we collect very little, we don’t sell it, and a few outside services we rely on (Google and our web host) collect some data on their own terms. Your survival supplies remain your own business.
Information you choose to give us
- Comments. If you leave a comment, we collect the name, email address and (optional) website you enter, the comment itself, and your IP address and browser details to help catch spam. Your email address is never shown publicly. An anonymized version of your email (a “hash”) may be checked against Gravatar to show your profile picture if you have one; Gravatar is run by Automattic, and its privacy policy is at automattic.com/privacy. Comments are checked for spam by a filter that runs on our own server (Antispam Bee); it doesn’t send your comment to an outside service.
- Messages. If you email us, we keep your name, email address and message so we can reply.
Information collected automatically
- Server logs. Like nearly every website, our host (GoDaddy) records basic technical information about each visit, such as IP address, browser type, the page requested and the time. These logs are used for security and to keep the site running.
- Site statistics. We use Google Analytics (by Google) to see which pages are popular and how people find the site. It may use cookies and collect information such as your approximate location, device and browser type, pages viewed and how you arrived. We look at this information in aggregate; we don’t use it to identify individual readers.
- Security. We record the IP addresses of failed login attempts to block attacks, and keep a short log of broken or redirected links (including IP addresses) so we can fix them.
Advertising
This site may show ads served by Google AdSense. Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this website or other websites. Google’s use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to you based on your visits to this and/or other sites on the internet. If you use an ad blocker, Google may show a message asking you to allow ads on this site.
You can opt out of personalized advertising from Google in My Ad Center, and opt out of personalized ads from many other vendors at aboutads.info. To learn more, see how Google uses information from sites that use its services.
Cookies
Cookies are small text files stored by your browser. This site and the services above use them to:
- remember your name and email if you choose that option when commenting (WordPress);
- count visits and understand how the site is used (Google Analytics);
- show and measure ads (Google AdSense).
You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings. The site will still work, though some features (like remembering your comment details) won’t.
Content from other sites
Some parts of the site load content directly from other companies’ servers, which means those companies receive your IP address and browser information when you view the page: fonts from Google Fonts and profile pictures from Gravatar. Posts may also embed videos or other media from sites like YouTube, which behave as if you had visited those sites. We link to many other sites, including shops and social media. Once you follow a link, that site’s privacy policy applies, not this one.
How we use information
- to run, secure and improve the site;
- to publish and moderate comments;
- to answer messages;
- to understand which posts readers find useful;
- to show ads that help cover the cost of the site.
We do not sell your personal information. We don’t share it with anyone except the service providers named in this policy, or if required by law. Because Google’s advertising cookies can be used for ads on other sites, some US state laws may treat that as “sharing” for targeted advertising; you can opt out of that using the Google and aboutads.info links above.
How long we keep it
Comments and their details are kept as long as the comment stays on the site. Messages are kept as long as needed to deal with them. Statistics and ad data are kept according to each provider’s own retention settings. Server logs are kept by our host for a limited period.
Your rights
Wherever you live, you can ask us to tell you what personal information we hold about you, correct it, or delete it (for example, a comment you left). If you are in the European Economic Area, the UK or Switzerland, you also have the right to object to or restrict how we use your information, to receive a copy of it, to withdraw consent at any time, and to complain to your local data protection authority. Residents of California and other US states with privacy laws have similar rights to know, delete, correct and opt out, and we won’t treat you differently for using them.
Where the law of the EEA or UK applies, we rely on your consent for advertising and analytics cookies, and on our legitimate interest in running a secure, working website for server logs, security and spam protection.
To make a request, contact us using the details below. We’ll reply within 30 days, or sooner where the law requires.
Where your data goes
The site is hosted in the United States, and the service providers above are based mainly in the United States. If you visit from elsewhere, your information will be processed there.
Security
We use HTTPS, keep the site and its plugins updated, and limit who can access it. No website is perfectly secure, but we take reasonable steps to protect what we hold.
Children
This site is not directed to children under 13, and we don’t knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has given us personal information, contact us and we’ll delete it.
Changes to this policy
If we change how we handle information, we’ll update this page and the date at the top.
